Challenges in Higher Education

Higher education in Arkansas needs improvement in several areas. As stated previously, many Arkansas high school graduates enter college without the academic proficiency necessary to succeed. In addition to that issue, insufficient student housing has also become a problem, particularly in U of A and UCA. University faculty members have also developed concerns over political interference in academia, leading to some educators considering other professions or seeking employment in different states. Cuts to higher education funding create challenges for students and faculty as well.

Graduation rates have increased over the last few years, but retention is still an important issue. Many Arkansans have attended college but dropped out before acquiring a bachelor's degree. In order to simplify the process of starting college, Arkansas ACCESS is intended to help students apply through a "simple, statewide universal college application to ease the admissions process." Gov. Sander's educational reform plan also seeks to expand scholarship opportunities and eligible admission exams for students applying to college.
