Challenges in Elementary Education
Elementary schools in Arkansas face various challenges. Many students across the state struggle with low levels of proficiency in literacy and math. Recent assessments indicated that only around 35% of Arkansas students are able to read at grade level. These learning gaps and low test scores in important subjects are cause for concern, and significant reform is necessary to improve student performance in these key areas. The pandemic worsened these academic deficiencies, but many of these issues are also influenced by rates of poverty in the state. A student's socioeconomic background should not impede them from their right to a high-quality, comprehensive educational experience.
Teacher shortages and unlicensed teachers also present additional problems for Arkansas' education system. The state also needs educational improvements for schools in rural areas, where resources and funding may be less available. Expanding reliable internet access in rural parts of Arkansas will also play a crucial role in assisting students academically.
